Coast Mountain College Graduate Advances in Environmental Science Tag: Coast Mountain College

For Kyla, who was born and raised in Prince Rupert, the outdoors has always been a huge part of life. “I was always the kid who was constantly looking for critters or reading field guidebooks,” Kyla says. She spent many summers living with her grandparents on their boat, exploring the B.C. coast. She recalls hiking and paddling local creeks with her grandfather, a professional creekwalker with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), and helping him assess salmon populations. These experiences helped build a passion for the outdoors and science.

At Vancouver Community College (VCC), our commitment to equity, inclusion, and reconciliation guides our work and shapes the spaces we create for our community. Grounded in the values of respect, belonging, and lifelong learning, VCC strives to ensure that all members of our community feel seen, heard, and empowered. The new Indigenous Story Booth, created in partnership with Coast Salish artist Shain Níniw-ém Salepem Jackson of the shishálh First Nation, embodies these values by offering a dedicated space for reflection, learning, and connection.

Coast Mountain College Collaborates with UNBC and Partners to Study Forest Soils in Northwest BC Tag: Coast Mountain College

This past summer, Coast Mountain College (CMTN) worked in collaboration with the University of Northern BC (UNBC), Fraser Basin Council, and Lheidli T'enneh First Nation to study the vulnerability to climate change of different forest soils from the coast to the interior. In addition to conducting research, UNBC has provided a seed grant to support the project, while CMTN’s role was to support field activities in the Terrace and Prince Rupert regions.
